Obesity usually results from a combination of causes and contributing factors. However, the most common cause occurs when a person takes in more calories than he or she metabolizes or burns. For a majority of people, this comes down to eating too much, or eating the wrong kind of foods, and getting very little or no exercise. Obesity or being overweight is a big problem in this country.
The following stats were taken from the CDC website:
- More than one-third of U.S. adults (34.9%) are obese.
- Obesity-related conditions include heart disease, stroke, type 2 diabetes and certain types of cancer, some of the leading causes of preventable death.
- The estimated annual medical cost of obesity in the U.S. was $147 billion in 2008 U.S. dollars; the medical costs for people who are obese were $1,429 higher than those of normal weight.
- Non-Hispanic blacks have the highest age-adjusted rates of obesity (47.8%) followed by Hispanics (42.5%), non-Hispanic whites (32.6%), and non-Hispanic Asians (10.8%)
- Obesity is higher among middle age adults, 40-59 years old (39.5%) than among younger adults, age 20-39 (30.3%) or adults over 60 or above (35.4%) adults.
Most of us probably know someone, a friend or family member, who is overweight. And, I would dare say that most people have some awareness that obesity can lead to major health problems. Yet, many people are overweight. Why is this the case? Why do some people succeed at losing weight while others fail? We know that the type of lifestyle has a lot to do with being overweight. But, could the underlying reason be a person’s mindset?
“I know I’m a little overweight. I wish I could lose a few pounds, but… it’s too hard. I hate exercise, It’s in my genes, so there is nothing I can do, I don’t have the time, I can’t eat that diet food, or when I find something that works, I’ll lose some weight. Oh, I’ll be okay. There is nothing biotox reviewa wrong with being big and beautiful” How many times have you heard these statements? All of these statements result from a particular mindset. However, none of them result in weight loss and good health.
What is the mindset for effective weight loss, and ultimately good health? What factors cause some people to have the mindset required to lose weight successfully? Firstly, they acquired the knowledge and awareness that certain lifestyles – such as unhealthy eating and little exercise – can lead to obesity, which will ultimately lead to certain chronic diseases later in life.
Secondly, people with the right mindset for effective weight loss admit that they may be obese or overweight, and need to do something about it. If they have not come to this conclusion, they can not be helped, and will never lose weight.
Thirdly, one must have a genuine, intrinsic desire to lose weight and become healthier. No matter how much a friend or family member want someone to lose weight, it’s never going to happen unless that someone has the desire themselves to make it happen. Nothing, or no one can give a person the desire to lose weight. Either they will have the desire or they won’t.
If they have the intrinsic desire to lose weight, then when their palate says yes to unhealthy food, their mindset will say no. When they are depressed and feel like going on a food binge to make themselves feel better, their mindset will say no. On those days when they don’t feel like exercising, their mindset will say go exercise. Without the strong desire to lose weight, it becomes easy to make excuses and do things that will prevent weight loss.
Fourthly, after developing a sincere desire to lose weight, people with the right mindset for weight loss will do diligent research on the best ways to lose weight. They will ask family members and friends, seek out weight loss books, and go online to learn as much as possible about what works and what doesn’t work to produce weight loss.
