Can Liverpool Win the Premiership?

It is one of the most discussed topics regarding English football right now. Liverpool have made their best ever start to a Premier League season and sit joint top of the table with Luiz Felipe Scolari’s Chelsea. However, is it simply a case of a decent run of form or do this Liverpool team have the staying power to challenge for the title this year?

Well, in short – they have their best chance for quite some time. Rather predictably, Rafa Benitez is keen to play down their chances, saying that his players ‘must keep their feet on the ground’. Despite these media friendly comments though, I think the Liverpool manager will be getting rather excited as well.

For the first time in his managerial reign, he has lots of genuine quality to choose from. Liverpool have more options and can operate different styles of play effectively – something they haven’t been able to do before. The goals come from Torres, Keane, Gerrard or Kuyt. Creativity comes from Babel, Benayoun, Alonso or Riera. Protection for the back four come from Mascherano or Lucas. Then, finally, Carragher, Skrtel, Agger, Aurelio, Arbeloa, Hyypia and Riena all help form a defense that has only conceded four goals in seven league games.

For me though, it is going forward where they are looking most impressive. Liverpool has built a reputation as a rather solid defensive side before, but now they have the attacking ability to compete with the best in the world. Away from home this season, they average two goals a game. They are going into games believing they can win – the likes of Torres, Gerrard and Mascherano are born winners. This, combined with supreme confidence is certainly a winning formula. The ข่าวลิเวอร์พูล football odds are starting to back Liverpool’s title bid and in all fairness, I can see why.

Their most recent result said a lot about their character as well. To come from two goals down against a team as capable as Manchester City, away from home, is the performance of potential Champions. In the past, you could see Chelsea or Manchester United pulling off such a result – but not Liverpool. This says a lot.

Of course, there is still a long way to go and there is one thing that will examine Liverpool’s title credentials further. How they react to their first league defeat will be interesting. They need to respond positively and not let it affect them – much like Manchester United have done after a poor start to the season. However, if the belief the team showed in the Manchester City fixture is anything to go by, then they should be just fine. We may even have a three horse race for the title on our hands. How good would that be?
