Changing your habits is far and away the best option for preventing unwanted weight gain, maintaining a reasonable weight or losing weight permanently. This is not a marketing slogan, this is a fact.
Despite the prevalence of diet plans, exercise programs, fitness centers, nutritionists and experts, 70% of our society is overweight and a study by Columbia University says that by 2030 How To Lock A Door Without A Lock, almost 50% of us will be obese. Because of these statistics we have become a nation obsessed with losing some of that weight.
Unfortunately, none of what we are doing works because about 95% of people who diet, gain their weight back and more.
Our obsession with losing weight has created thousands of different diets and ten times that many con artists who prey on the very people who count on them for help. We watch celebrities tell us how much weight they have lost, we watch the biggest loser drop weight like a rock and we see thousands of ads for exercise machines showing us how beautiful we’ll look if we use them. All of this is a gimmick and most of us know it, but we still do it.
It wasn’t that long ago that tapeworms were sold as a way to eat as much as you want and stay thin. Can you imagine ordering a jar packed with sanitized tape worms so that you can swallow them to lose weight?
What we’re buying into today with many of the diet and exercise programs isn’t any more productive and the ads promoting these products are just as ridiculous. People did buy tapeworms and many people still try just as outrageous ideas to lose weight.
It is time for all of us, including the health profession, nutritionists and fitness gurus to recognize that saying just eat fewer calories, eat healthier or exercise more does not work. We must face up to the fact that there is no magic bullet for quick weight loss and we must admit that what we’re doing does not work. We must have a different solution.
When you diet, exercise, take pills or use some other method to lose weight, you are fighting against the habits that you created over a lifetime. Eating is second only to breathing as a habit that most of us can’t ignore. Changing your eating habits defies the very habits that you have told your body and mind that you want to have, even if you didn’t mean to tell it that.
Grape juice: Red wine gets all the publicity, but the heart-healthiness of wine comes from red or purple grapes, so drinking grape juice provides similar benefits without having to get plowed every night.
Salmon: Bears eat a lot of salmon. Have you ever seen a bear have a heart attack? Neither have I, but that’s beside the point. Salmon has a lot of omega-3 fatty acids, which have been found to reduce heart attack risk.
Apples: You know that old saying, “An apple a day keeps the doctor away?” There’s some truth to that, because the pectin in apples has been found to help reduce blood cholesterol. Apples are also rich in fiber, which you can’t have too much of.
Spinach: Spinach is one of the better things you can yank out of the ground, wash the sand off of, and eat. Lots better than worms, for one. Spinach has folate, which has been shown to reduce some nasty stuff in your blood called homocysteine, which in turn reduces the chances of a heart attack.
Berries: Blueberries, raspberries and strawberries all have antioxidants, which in some studies have been shown to promote better cardiovascular health. There have been some differing opinions about the value antioxidants lately, but what the heck, berries taste good and they won’t hurt you (unless you suffer from diverticulitis, in which case you should avoid berries with seeds).
